This story is there in Kerala for long. I was with the impression that, most Keralites know the story of a child saying "The King Is Nude". All of a sudden, my friend asked me what is that story. Then I realized there might be at least one person who has never heard that story. It is a story of a child saying that the king is nude, out of his innocence. I have seen many newspapers' advertisements with title "The King is Nude" to claim that they report truth, fearless. Now for those who are new, here is the story.

ഒരിടത്ത്‌ ഒരു രാജാവുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഒരു ദിവസം അദ്ദേഹം മന്ത്രിയെ വിളിച്ചിട്ട്‌ പറഞ്ഞു "മഹാനായ നമുക്ക്‌, മറ്റു രാജക്കന്‍മാര്‍ക്ക്‌ ഇല്ലാത്ത പല കഴിവുകളും ഉണ്ടല്ലൊ. ആയതിനാല്‍ മറ്റാര്‍ക്കും ഇല്ലാത്ത എന്തെങ്കിലും നമുക്ക്‌ വേണം". ഒരു നിമിഷം ആലോചിച്ചിട്ട്‌ പറഞ്ഞു "ആര്‍ക്കും കാണാന്‍ കഴിയാത്ത വസ്ത്രം ഉണ്ടാക്കി തരണം"

മന്ത്രി രാജ്യത്തെ പണ്ഡിതന്‍മാരെ വിളിച്ചിട്ട്‌ രാജാവിന്റെ കല്‍പനയെ കുറിച്ച്‌ പറഞ്ഞു. രാജാവിന്റെ കല്‍പന നിറവേറ്റാന്‍ കഴിയില്ല എന്ന്‌ എല്ലാവര്‍ക്കും അറിയാം, പക്ഷെ രാജാവിനോട്‌ പറയുവാൻ ധൈര്യം ഇല്ല, തല പോയാലോ? ഒടുവില്‍ മന്ത്രി രാജാവിന്റെ അടുക്കൽ ഒരു ഒഴിഞ്ഞ താലവുമായി ചെന്ന്‌ പറഞ്ഞു. "മഹാരാജൻ‍, ഇതാ അങ്ങു പറഞ്ഞതു പോലെ ആര്‍ക്കും കാണാന്‍ കഴിയാത്ത വസ്ത്രം". രാജാവ്‌ ചോദിച്ചു "ഇത്‌ ഒഴിഞ്ഞ താലമല്ലേ?" മന്ത്രി പറഞ്ഞു, "മഹാരാജൻ‍, ഇത്‌ ആര്‍ക്കും കാണാന്‍ കഴിയാത്ത വസ്ത്രമല്ലേ, അതിനാല്‍ അങ്ങേക്കും കാണാന്‍ കഴിയില്ല".

അപ്പോള്‍ രാജാവിന് ആ വസ്ത്രം ധരിക്കാന്‍ മോഹം. മന്ത്രി അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ആ വസ്ത്രം ധരിപ്പിച്ചു. ആർക്കും കാണാന്‍ കഴിയാത്ത വസ്ത്രമല്ലേ, അതിനാല്‍ രാജാവ്‌ നഗ്നനായിരുന്നു. പ്രജകള്‍ തന്റെ വസ്ത്രത്തെക്കുറിച്ച്‌ പറയുന്നതു കേള്‍ക്കാന്‍ രാജാവു കൊട്ടരത്തിനു വെളിയില്‍ ഇറങ്ങി നടക്കുവാന്‍ തുടങ്ങി. രാജാവ്‌ നഗ്നനാണ് എന്നു എല്ലാവ൪ക്കും അറിയാം, പക്ഷെ പറയുവാന്‍ ധൈര്യം ഇല്ല. ഏല്ലാവരും രാജാവിനെ പുകഴ്ത്തുവാൻ‍ തുടങ്ങി. അതു കേട്ടു രാജാവ്‌ സന്തോഷത്തോടുകൂടി നടന്നു. അപ്പോള്‍ കൂട്ടത്തില്‍ ഒരു ചെറിയ കുട്ടി വിളിച്ചു പറഞ്ഞു "അയ്യേ... ഈ രാജവ്‌ തുണിയുടുത്തിട്ടില്ലേ....." അപ്പോള്‍ താന്‍ നഗ്നനാണെന്ന സത്യം രാജാവ്‌ തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞു.

For those who are not fluent in reading/understanding Malayalam, here is an English translation.

There lived a king. One day, he called his minister and said, "I am a great king and I am better than any other king. So I wish to have something special". After thinking for a moment he said, "I need an invisible dress".

The minister called a meeting of all wise men in the country and told them about the king's order. They knew they cannot fulfill their king's wish, but they are afraid to tell the king, its impossible to make an invisible dress. At last, the minister came to the king with an empty box ad said "Your majesty, here is the invisible dress". The king asked, "Isn't it an empty box? The minister convinced the king that the box is not empty, but he can't see it only because the dress is invisible.

Then the king wished to wear the dress. The minister helped the king to wear it. The king was nude, as the invisible dress didn't exist. The king came out of palace to get opinion of his people on his new dress. All people knew the king is nude, but afraid to say. So they started praising the king. But one innocent child among the crowd shouted "Hey see, the king is nude". Then the king realized he is nude.

So when we say, "Your majesty is nude", realize that there are hundreds and thousands of people think the same, but do not have courage or chance to say it.
