Numbers, Digits and special numeric signs In Malayalam

Most of the positional base 10 numeral systems in the world have originated from India, where the concept of positional numerology was first developed. The Indian numeral system is commonly referred to in the West as the Hindu-Arabic numeral system or even Arabic numerals, since it reached Europe through the Arabs.

A decimal place system has been traced back to ca. 500 in India. Before that epoch, the Brahmi numeral system was in use; that system did not encompass the concept of the place-value of numbers. Instead, Brahmi numerals included additional symbols for the tens, as well as separate symbols for hundred and thousand. Malayalam has different symbols for fractions also, like half, quarter and three quarters. Malayalam also has separate symbol for date mark and is listed under other letters.

Note: The special charecters ten, hundred etc may not be visible properly as most fonts available now doesnot implement them. Click on the letter to see and learn how to write them. The words given with each letter is just for displaying how it looks inside some words, or start with. You are not expected to learn them till you complete learning other letters/characters

As you may be aware, studying Malayalam is not easy, but not difficult. I may rate Malayalam at an average difficulty to learn/study. But some consonants and vowels are really tongue twisters. But once you learn it, you can handle easly.
